Engine Room Fire - LPG Carrier

Engine room fire broke out on this LPG Carrier (GRT 7,900), while she was en-route off Honduras.

After appropriate actions by crew the fire was successfully extinguished by release of the CO2 system, and the vessel was towed to Panama where M/E overhaul and necessary repairs in way of affected steel / cabling / panels and piping were carried out.

Complete cleaning of the Engine Room and decontamination from chlorides were also effected, whilst a sum of 80 days were required for completion of permanent repairs.

Our Panama and Istanbul Offices were involved on behalf of H&M Underwriters, through constant teamwork since the first notice of the fire, assisting Owners with towing arrangements/negotiation, finding suitable workshop and lay-by berth for repairs and following up repair progress until final sea trials.


A unique case of a small size General Cargo vessel

A unique case of a small size General Cargo vessel capsized apparently due to loss of stability, during cargo operations at a Spanish port.

Our Gibraltar Office urgently attended this case on behalf of Hull & Machinery Underwriters in order to ascertain the extent of damage and investigate the cause of capsizing, continuously monitoring and reporting to Principals.


Steering gear unit and rudder stock damage, due to grounding.

Upon removal of rudder blade with vessel afloat, the rudder stock was transported to workshop for measurements and subsequent machining. In line boring of both neck bearing and rudder horn pintle was carried out in order to restore alignment in way of rudder assembly.

Our Piraeus Head Office attended the case, assisting with preparation of repairs specification, closely monitoring repairs and continuously reporting progress to principals


Renewal of Crankshaft and Bedplate in Portugal

A major repair rarely encountered, currently attended by our Gibraltar Office at Setubal, Portugal — Crankshaft / Bedplate renewal of a 2-stroke, MAN 6S50MC-C.

All M/E heavy components suitably rigged, lifted, manoeuvred to cargo hold and thereafter removed ashore, whilst A-Frame remains suspended inside the E/R.

Custom made lifting tools and rails frame were manufactured, in order to support and remove the damaged Crankshaft / Bedplate assembly initially to the cargo hold and subsequently ashore.
